Why BD5 & BD9 Is Important To HD Users

At first BD5 and BD9 may sound like a boring topic, but it is important if you shoot and distribute HD. WHY? Because both allow you to burn HD material to standard SL and DL DVDs. Wait, isn’t DVD a SD format? Not exactly; you see the BD5 and BD9 may be on a DVD, but it’s in the Blu-ray format. So this plays back on a Blu-ray player in HD. Thus, any computer with a DVD Burner and the right software can burn HD Disks. So much for the good news. The bad news is that a SL 4.7 GB DVD can only hold about 20 minutes at the maximum data rate of 30 Mbps. Slow the data rate down to 20 Mbps and you get about 30 minutes. Use a DL 8.5 GB DVD and the times range from about 35 minutes at 30 Mbps to 60 minutes at 18 Mbps. OK, so it’s not a full length movie, but it could be enough for some jobs and even a wedding skateboard video. :)
